On the 26th of August 2020, during a mortality survey on a windfarm, a Red Kite collided with a windturbine blade. It is a protected species classified as vulnerable in France (IUCN, 2017). Then a race against time has begun…
The bird was urgently taken to a partner veterinarian, Dr Bouche, in Reims. Fractures to the shoulder and collarbone, head trauma, its prognosis was not good. Despite laser treatment of the spine, flower essences… the Red Kite remained in a comatose state for two days.
However, on the 30th of August, it is back on its legs and the next day, it feeds alone! Transfer to CRESREL association (in Soulaines-Dhuys) is organized on the 1st of September 2020. On site, the team begins its rehabilitation, fully funded by the windfarm operator.
Finally, on the 24th of September 2020, almost a month after its accident… the Royal Kite has been released!
